LingCologne2021: Multilingualism
Online conference on the myth of monolingualism
10-11 June 2021

Organized by the Cologne Center of Language Sciences (CCLS), University of Cologne

The LingCologne2021 conference highlights the ubiquity of multilingualism in our lives and around the world. In the language sciences, multilingualism is often still treated as a special phenomenon. This conference turns the assumption of the monolingual language user as the norm on its head by focusing on the centrality and importance of multilingualism in various contexts, providing insights into how historical, societal, legal and multimodal aspects shape different realms of multilingualism.

The workshop will address many phenomena associated with multilingualism that have not been thoroughly explored, described and explained, taking on different perspectives and putting realms of multilingualism in the crosshairs that are too often ignored. Four key areas will serve as a frame to zoom in on multilingualism:

  • Educational and Cognitive Perspectives
  • Institutional Settings
  • Interactional Practices
  • Diachronic Contexts

We invite submissions of abstracts for poster presentations contributing to the topic of multilingualism and focusing on aspects related to the four conference macro research areas. All abstracts will be peer-reviewed anonymously. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words (excluding references, pictures, tables or diagrams). Abstracts must be anonymized and sent in pdf format via email to ccls-info(at)uni-koeln.de.

Registration is free of charge. Sign Language interpreters, that is International Sign Language (IS) and German Sign Language (DGS), will be available.
