General overview

The LingCologne conference will be hosted via Zoom as a webinar. Depending on your experience with Zoom, we would like to provide you with some technical aspects.

Joining the meeting will be possible as of 8.45 a.m. CEST on both days. The link has been distributed via mail with all registered participants. The conference will start at 9.00 a.m. CEST There is no waiting room, meaning access is granted immediately.

Participants will have the role of an attendee. As an attendee, you will join in listen-only mode. The hosts can unmute one or more attendees, but attendees cannot unmute their own audio. Video sharing will not be possible for attendees. However, the hosts may grant the right to single attendees who wish to sign questions during the Q&A sessions of the keynote talks. The participants list will not be visible to other attendees.

Keynote talks

The keynote talks will last about 60 minutes, followed by a 30-minute discussion. During the talks and Q&A sessions, you will see three tiles: the speaker and two sign language interpreters (DGS and IS).

If you have a question, you have the following options:

  • Raise your hand: If you raise your hand, the host will give you the right to unmute your audio. Your camera will remain switched off. You can then pose your question.
  • Post your question to the Q&A section: The host will then forward it to the speaker. The question will not be visible to other attendees.
  • Sign your question: If you wish to sign your question, raise your hand and send the phrase “SIGN QUESTION” to the Q&A section. This will not be visible to other participants. The host will then give you the right to switch on your video. This is a workaround due to software constraints.

Poster Presentations

The poster presentations will be held via a Zoom meeting to allow for interaction. This means you will have to leave the webinar and join the Zoom meeting. The link has been distributed via mail with all registered participants. There will be enough time to switch from the keynote talk to the poster presentation meeting. In the meeting, you will find several breakout rooms. In each breakout room, there will be one poster presentation. You can visit each breakout room independently.

Sign Language interpretation

There will be DGS and IS language interpreters available, providing on-demand interpretation. You will recognize them through their name tag/label. They will provide interpretation on demand.

After the poster presentations, please rejoin the webinar.

Social interaction and networking

In an effort to foster social interaction and promote networking among LingCologne attendees in the digital realm, we provide a tool that offers a place for social get-together. Follow this link to join the Social Meeting in Linguist World, which is active throughout the conference and open to all participants.

How can you use it?

  • You can just click on the link and follow the steps (no need to download anything).
  • Choose an avatar and allow access to your camera and microphone.
  • Your private data are save (there is no data collected).
  • In the world, you can move around with the arrow keys.
  • If your avatar is close to another avatar, a "bubble" opens up and you can talk and sign (a video opens up); up to 4 people can be in one bubble.
  • On the right side of the world, there are two jitsi-rooms, so more than 4 people can get togehter and talk and sign.

Have fun networking and enjoy your coffee and lunch together!

If you experience technical difficulties, you have the following two options:
